We are all frustrated. Scared. Feeling helpless. We barely finish reeling from the news of a terror attack when we’re hearing about another. In Jerusalem. In Judea and Samaria. In ‘Israel proper’. Why aren’t we being protected? How come there is no solution? We’re looking everywhere for who to blame, then settling for the obvious: our leadership. After all, they made the promises. They’re calling the shots. The buck stops with them. We voted them in for heaven’s sake; if it’s not their fault who else can we blame? How’s this for an idea? Blame. The. Terrorists.
We are under attack by people who are out for blood. People who feel a moral and religious obligation to attack us. Who are attacking to kill. Who don’t care if they lose their lives in the process. Some have even posted on social media prior to their attacks hoping to die in the process. Seventy-two virgins, family honor, or some other fanatic nonsense they hope to achieve in their post-corporeal existence. People keep crying ‘lone wolf’ attacks. No. Or maybe yes. But it doesn’t matter. Because the wolves keep on coming, and one way or another we have to fight this.
A lone wolf attack that is an isolated incident is one thing. But a culture and a society that encourages and incites these attacks? That’s more like we’re living among the wolves. As if we are literally living in the midst of countless wolves who can each attack at any moment. And maybe we are. But we. Are NOT. Sheep.
What can we do? Be vigilant. Be smart. Own a weapon? Carry it. Schools don’t have adequate security? Strike until you do, like Jerusalem is. Entirely appropriate responses. We should absolutely demand protection. It’s our right. Should we stay home and hide? Of course not. Stay out of Arab areas? Hell yeah. Is that racist? Who cares? I’d rather be cautious and look like a racist than be dead…
We need to unite and be strong. We need to blame the terrorists and support the victims. Don’t like the government? Let’s fight about it another day. We will anyway… Right now we need to refute the lies that our enemies fabricate as easily as they breathe, and make every effort to spread the truth. We need to encourage the good people among our Arab neighbors to come out strongly and loudly against terror. (Oh please, please, good people among the Arabs, let us hear your voices!) Above all we need to come together, protect each other, and remember who the enemy is. And who exactly is the enemy? The terrorists. The society that breeds terrorists. The leaders who incite terrorists.
We are strong. We are determined. We are brave. We are hopeful.
We are Israel.
